When you make some kind of fool of yourself, save it as a story for later. Be the life of the party. How they’ll laugh. May as well. Though watch out, she thought, some people have no sense of humour. They just think you’re a fool.

Lazy clouds, loose and ragged, a drifting across blue. The sun there for moments or minutes; water flashing points of light. A flick of tiny fish between pebbles; greens in trees reflected – a willow bending to trail its leaves. Burbling and shhhh; the breeze shift through branches.
